“We already have an MSP website” isn’t the same as being found online

Two years ago, your managed service provider (MSP) invested in a website redesign. New layout, updated copy, maybe a fresh logo treatment. You paid the invoice and moved on, because the work was done.

Except the work wasn’t done.

The redesign was the starting line, not the finish.

Reading the Fox & Crow Instinct 404: MSP Not Found research makes that gap hard to ignore: 93.5 percent of operationally established MSPs are stuck at the same website-maturity tier.

Zero actually reach the top.

These aren’t struggling MSPs, they’re established businesses with real clients, real MRR, and real operational history. Being good at running an MSP doesn’t predict being findable. The two have decoupled almost completely.

Having a website and being findable are two different things

A redesign changes how your site looks once.

Findability is an ongoing state, not a condition your site reaches after a redesign and holds indefinitely.

It requires small, continued maintenance, the kind of work nobody puts on a recurring task list because it doesn’t feel urgent until the inbound pipeline runs dry.

Here’s the pattern.

Two MSPs redesign in the same year. One keeps at it afterward: updating schema markup, soliciting and responding to Google reviews on a schedule, making sure their name, address, and phone number match exactly across every directory listing.

The other approves the design, pays the invoice, and moves on.

Eighteen months later, the first MSP shows up in local searches for “managed IT services” in their city. The second doesn’t.

The sites look similar.

The difference is the work that happened, or didn’t, after the redesign wrapped.

This is where the billing relationship with many marketing providers becomes a problem.

“We already redesigned your site” is often the last substantive thing a provider does before the retainer continues unchanged.

The deliverable was the redesign.

Everything that makes it matter over time:

  • structured data
  • review velocity
  • technical upkeep

tends to fall into a gap nobody explicitly owns.

Your MSP website isn’t a brochure you print once. It’s infrastructure that requires maintenance, and most of that maintenance isn’t glamorous enough to show up in a monthly report.

Why 93.5 percent of established MSPs are stuck at the same level

Sit with that number for a moment: it’s not describing new MSPs or under-resourced ones. It’s describing operationally established businesses that have been around long enough to have processes, staff, and a client base worth protecting. Operational maturity doesn’t translate to digital visibility. You can build a genuinely excellent MSP, retain clients for years, grow through referrals, and still be invisible to prospects searching for you right now.

Search visibility isn’t awarded once based on how professional your site looks at launch. It’s earned incrementally through ongoing signals that search engines and AI tools use to judge whether your business is active and credible, and those signals decay if nobody refreshes them. A site untouched since a redesign two years ago looks the same to both: inactive.

Here are three questions worth putting to your marketing team before the next invoice clears:

  • What specifically changed on my site or listings in the last 90 days? Not what’s planned, what happened.
  • Can you show me the task list you’re working from for my account each week?
  • If the redesign was the main deliverable, what have you been billing for since?

The answers don’t need to be long. They need to be specific.

“Ongoing optimization” is not a task list.

The easiest MSP marketing win: It takes 10-17 hours, not a redesign

The same research documents the path off the plateau: roughly 10 to 17 hours of one-time setup, followed by 30 minutes a week of upkeep.

A bounded project, not another multi-month redesign cycle.

If you’re not sure where to begin, I have a free suggestion:

Fox & Crow Group built a completely free MSP marketing guide and 52-week planning workbook covering the full setup process for MSP marketing and the ongoing weekly maintenance cadence. No paywall, no login, nothing collected. AI prompts are included so you can build a whole year’s worth of marketing – no catch. Make it even more impactful with a competitive analysis report.
