I work with MSPs on sales and marketing every day, and Fox & Crow Group builds and sells both software and research that measures MSP marketing performance. With that bias stated right up front, the data is still the data.
Fox & Crow Group analyzed MSP and MSP-adjacent firms through our research platform, FAC Instinct, and what we found was pretty shocking. 92.3 percent of those firms show zero measurable search presence.
Not a low search presence.
Zero.
They simply…don’t show up.
And if your MSP doesn’t show up in search, there’s no inbound leads to generate, no matter how much you’re paying someone to generate them.
Buyers can’t find you.
When MSP leads aren’t coming in
When MSP owners tell me inbound isn’t working, I ask them one question first: “how many website visits did you get from organic search last month?”
Most of them don’t know.
Some of them guess, and the guess is almost always wrong.
They’re counting total site visits, which includes direct traffic, referral clicks, email clicks, and paid ads.
Organic search, meaning people who found them by typing a question into Google and landing on their site, is often a tiny fraction of that number.
Usually, it’s close to zero.
This matters because inbound lead generation depends on search visibility.
A prospect who doesn’t know your MSP exists has to find you somehow. If your digital footprint is nonexistent, they won’t. They’ll find whoever does show up.
MSPs throw money at paid ads and outbound campaigns and wonder why their cost per lead keeps climbing. The answer is usually that they’re paying to compensate for a search presence problem they haven’t fixed.
Before you spend another dollar on lead generation, you need to know whether buyers can find your MSP at all.
Start by asking your marketing team or marketing agency these questions:
- Can you show me how many actual website visits came from search last month, not from paid ads?
- Was my website built using AI code? If so, what did you use, and how did you ensure that search engines could find and read the content?
- Can I see everything you added or changed on my site or listings in the last 90 days?
- Is the content on my blog embedded from another source or is it original content building my local presence and domain authority?
If they can’t answer all of these questions clearly and quickly, you’re likely part of the 92.3 percent of MSPs that search engines don’t care about.
What most MSPs are getting wrong before a lead ever reaches them
The FAC Instinct data shared in our July 2026 report 404: MSP Not Found covered almost 40,000 MSP and MSP-adjacent firms.
Less than 7 percent of them have enough organic traffic that search engines even bother tracking them.
This cuts across all firm sizes, geographies, and service models. The overwhelming majority of MSPs have done nothing, or not enough, to make themselves findable in search.
Search visibility isn’t complicated to start building. It doesn’t require a six-month SEO engagement or a new website. It starts with making sure the basic signals that tell Google your MSP exists, is local, and is legitimate are in place. Most aren’t.
Your local search presence depends on consistently updated business information across the web, a claimed Google business profile, and a functional and complete website that isn’t static. If you don’t know whether or not those things are missing or broken, you’re starting from behind before a prospect ever types a query.
The good news?
You can fix this. Yourself. Without an agency, a consultant or any paid help.
The MSPs with measurable search presence didn’t get there by accident. They did the unglamorous work of claiming their profiles, updating their information, and building content that answers the questions their buyers are searching for.
Where to go from here
Search visibility, claiming your Google Business Profile, and your overall digital footprint are starting points, not a complete MSP inbound lead generation strategy. I cover the broader picture in my guide to MSP lead generation, including what campaign-ready means before you invest in paid programs.
Fix your MSP visibility
Let’s face it – more than 7 percent of MSPs are clearly paying for marketing that isn’t working. That’s why I built a completely free MSP marketing guide.
48 short and free lessons on all things MSP marketing, a workbook you can fill out as you go through it, and all the AI prompts you’ll need to build your own marketing plan, marketing calendar, and content for a full year of effective local online MSP marketing. Take the finished printout and feed it into the AI of your choice. No need for a consultant or an agency. You don’t even have to talk to me to use it. (You can email me when you’re done if you want, I’d like to hear how it worked for you!)
There’s no paywall, no form, and no catch. It lives in your browser only, so save your work, print off the finished workbook, and clear your cache when you’re done. Use it as many times as you want, share it with anyone you like. It’s built for MSPs. It’s a perfect and practical starting point for MSPs who are tired of being invisible.
